[developers] changes to LKB and [incr tsdb()] code

dear all,

i just checked in several code changes that i will want to discuss more
tomorrow.  mostly [incr tsdb()] is affected, but also the generator and
MRS output.  for all i can tell, nothing should break, but in case i am 
falsely optimistic please let me know :-)!
