Just a small update on this spr: I have found the cause of the
international string output problem. I'm convinced that it can be
solved, but it's going to take a bit more work than I thought at first.

I should have a patch ready for the string output and Japanese input
problems within the next two weeks; I'll track down the ELI problem
before that; expect a patch for that within the next week.
