Ann, thanks for adding the reference to Condoravdi 1990.

re Dowty: I guess you have his 1991 Language paper in mind 
(http://linguistics.berkeley.edu/~syntax-circle/syntax-group/dowty91.pdf). 
He's aiming at treating there symmetric predicates, too, but one has to be 
a bit critical, in my opinion, with the presented analysis, since at the 
end of the day an entity bears a (Proto-)Agent role in his numerical 
comparison model, if the other entity of a (two-place) relation bears a 
(Proto-)Patient role. And this is a bit difficult to see/show in a 
symmetric relation, as he also acknowledges.
