OK - looks like the .bashrc I was using was loading a
LOGONROOT/dot.bashrc which sets the environment variable. So, if one
once uses LOGON on a machine, one will get LUI even in a non-LOGON
LKB, unless one remembers to comment out those lines again. And of
course egrepping for lui in one's normal startup files doesn't reveal
anything.
