yes, i'm sure this is the same phenomenon and will be resolved once i
commit the more careful output and more robust input code.

but i would be curious to know how (and when) dan created these files for
you?  i think we should try hard to avoid empty LNKs, and they should under
no circumstances crop up in ERG outputs.
