but i believe that would not go together well with transfer
meta-variables in the output (e.g. the [ LBL #lbl ] in the variant
sketched by emily).  true, with +copy+ these would no longer be
needed, but i doubt the output overwriting of ARG1 would work as in
that rule.  but do you actually need that role to be typed ‘x’,
though?  if not, the following might just work:

  [...] OUTPUT [ RELS <! + copy+ & [ ARG1 [ DITCH + ] ] !> ].

transfer meta-variables on PRED, CARG, and variable properties are
severely limited, often in not very transparent ways, i am afraid!
