[developers] Special characters in orthographic subrules

Hello all,

I would like to use a few special characters in my irules definition for
Nuuchahnulth. These special characters are:

(
)
!
. (period)

These are historically used to donate certain types of phonemes in the
language family. Is there a way to escape these characters in my irules
file?
