apologies, i should have told you: even when installing on AMD64, the
`logon_linux_x86_32.tgz' archive is still needed.  see

for all i know, there is no 64-bit version of PET.  what LOGON does is
a dual work-around: compile a 32-bit binary without mmap(2), such that
it runs happily in 32-bit compatibility mode (the mmap(2) defaults in
PET seem to conflict with the basic address layout on AMD64).  seeing
what you wrote above, i now wonder which binary you ended up using?
