[lkb] memory allocation problems with erg

someone else may be able to explain exactly why virtual memory doesn't
help, but it never has with Allegro CL in my experience.  If you'd had
a 512MB machine, then I could have suggested ways to cut down the size
of the loaded ERG, but I don't think it's viable to cut it down to fit
into 256MB
