how exactly?  where do things go wrong?

the simplified `ecl-patches' actually looks like an improvement to me,
since my original method was rather brittle.  maybe we should now make
ECL 0.9g the minimum requirement, as that apparently works well for the
MRS code at least.  plus maybe the `preprocessor' system needs further
adaptation, but we should avoid going back to the original ECL hacks,
in my view.
