sorry, i should have posted more earlier.  ann made a change on 20-oct
last year, in check-multi-and-add-edges(), which i suspect is related
to this problem: the LKB used to disallow multiple distinct inflection 
positions on multi-words, so it could not attach a prefix to the first
token of a multi-word, and a suffix to its last.  ann relaxed this by
allowing the value of `infl-pos' to be nil.  the revision to the ERG
checked in by dan activated the new mode, hence i believe the code is
probably problematic, while the ERG change merely revealed the bug.
