i suspect the problem may not be the virtualization environment but the
unfortunate default of Ubuntu to _not_ install the 32-bit compatibility
packages.  the LOGON tree uses quite a number of 32-bit binaries, hence
having 32-bit dynamic libraries available would be essential.
