[developers] Weird GUI behavior on new ubuntu machine

Thanks, Yi.  That was indeed the problem.  Disabling SCIM (and
reverting to the emacs-internal input method for Japanese) has
fixed things.

I still get the font warnings, but they don't seem to cause any problems.
