that looks a lot like the issues francis was having (also on Ubuntu).
i believe the tentative conclusion is that there genuinly is something
wrong in the X server setup.  francis also reports getting on error on

  xlsfonts -ll

apparently, uninstalling the offending fonts is the only remedy we know
of currently.  yi was reporting font-related problem with recent Fedora
installations too, but i believe the system still does work for him, so
he is getting less severe `missing font' warnings rather than the error
you report in the above.
