well, it turned out that we had not properly tested a recent change in
the run-time image creation for Windows :-{.  i have generated a fresh
build at

  http://lingo.stanford.edu/ftp/2004-09-17/

at least montse and julia have confirmed this one works well for them.
plus, this latest build includes Windows and Solaris binaries.
